PERSUASIVE WRITING PROMPTS

Remember that you will not be penalized for your choice. If you choose to challenge yourself, that will be taken into consideration in your writing evaluation.

Persuasive essays are written to convince the reader to either change their mind or to adopt your way of thinking. Many times the purpose of the essay is the last thing asked in the prompt. This will then lead to a proposed solution or an explanation of why (thesis statement). Descriptions and explanations of choice of items should be written in the introduction (subpoints).

1 Convince your parents to raise you allowance. Should chewing gum be allowed on the school campus? Persuade your mom to let you have your favorite food any time you want it.
2 Should there be a dress code at school? Children watch too much television. Do you agree? Take a stand and support it. Convince you reader of your position. Some schools in the United States are requiring that students volunteer for several hours each semester to help on a community problem. What do you think? Should students be required to volunteer several hours each semester to help on a community problem?
3 Some people believe that the United States is educationally behind other developed countries in Europe and Asia. In taking a course of action to improve the education in the United States, some people think that the school year should be extended year-round with short breaks between semesters. What do you think? Should the school year be extended Years ago, there were separate schools for girls and boys. Do you think this is beneficial? Should boys and girls attend separate schools? Many people are convinced that violence on TV and other media influence children to become violent themselves. Do you think this is true? Do you think that violence in TV and other media is responsible for increased violence among today’s youth?
