Winter Poetry Directions and Rubric

Name:__________________________________                                     Date due:_____/_____/_____

Project Directions:  Create a book of poetry with winter themes.  See the samples.

Pages in the Poetry Booklet:
  • Cover - Title, author's name, illustration or border art
  • Table of Contents - Poem titles are capitalized.  Poems and page numbers should be in sequence.  Include illustrations or border art.
  • Required poetry:
    - Three or more separate stanza poems, each with at least 12 lines.  You decide how many lines will be in each stanza: 3 stanza, 4 lines each? 4 stanzas, 3 lines each? 5 stanzas, 3 lines each? 6 stanzas, 2 lines each?
    - All other poems should have a unique type.  For example, create one haiku poem, not two haiku poems.
    - Every poetry page should have carefully designed illustrations or border art.
Topics and Types of Poems:
  • Poems should vary in type, topic, and length. The Seasonal Poetry Class Set of Examples available in the classroom provides examples of poem types and winter season topics.
  • Topics:  Snow sports, winter weather, animals that live in the snow, snowmen, snowflakes, Hanukkah, Christmas, and so on
  • Types: Stanza poems, haiku, haikon (shape), couplet, triplet, quatrain, limerick, clerihew, terquain, cinquain, diamante, septet, lantern, phone, tanka, and so on;  certain types of poetry require rhyming patterns.
Writing:
  • Poems, stanzas, and lines should have a clear sequence of thought.  Poems are not paragraphs!  See the samples!
  • Each poem should have only one topic.
  • Use vivid detail and precise descriptive words.
  • All poems should have a title with appropriate letters capitalized on the poetry page in addition to the Table of Contents.
  • Every line of poetry should start with a capital letter.
  • Use commas, periods, question marks and other punctuation where necessary.
  • Poetry will be published on unlined paper reflecting skill at using a ruler or paper guide to write horizontally.  Shape poems may follow the shape of the poem as needed.  Margins and alignment should be neat and appropriate for the types of poems created.
  • The final published copy will be created on black construction paper using milky or gel pens.  Some Gellyroll and Jellyline pens may not work well on black construction paper, so try your pens out to see if they will work properly on black construction paper.
  • The final project should reflect the work you are able to produce given the time available in class and for homework.
  • Information should be neatly presented reflecting personal pride.
