When studying
spelling or vocabulary words, complete some of these activities to help learn the spelling
and use of the words.
- List variations of the word: enter, entered, entering;
twenty, twentieth, twenty-five.
- Use each word in a meaningful sentence.
- Write out the most common definitions of each word.
- Copy an example sentence from a glossary or dictionary.
- Create a crossword puzzle with a variety of clue types (definitions, antonyms, fill in
the blank sentences, etc.).
- Use graph paper to outline the word shape.
- Write a story using as many words as possible.
- Make a synonym list (similar).
- Make an antonym list (opposite).
- Practice the words in cursive.
- List the words in ABC order.
- Take a quiz on paper with a partner.
- Make a set of flash cards and practice words with a partner.
- Write missing word sentences to give to a partner.
- Word race: and = stand, sand, handful
- Letter move: took = look, loom, boom, room, roof, root

- Names of days and months
- Math terms from the glossary of the math text
- Streets, towns, states, countries, and geographic sites
- Vocabulary from the glossary of the social studies text
- Science terms
- Reading vocabulary words
- Words from jobs or hobbies
- Synonyms for over-used words: big enormous, gigantic
- Words from any book or subject in the library
- Words from an encyclopedia
- Computer or technology terms
