Short Story Directions

Page Planning

The objective of this assignment is to write an original short story with illustrations.  Model your work after illustrated children books intended for young readers.  These stories typically have words and pictures on each page.
The short story must be fictional.  You may choose to make your fictional story a mystery, science fiction, fantasy, or realistic.  You may base your story on real events and people, but you should change names of the characters.   The story should also have a moral or lesson that develops through the plot (problem, climax, resolution).
You may produce the short story published copy by hand, with a computer, or use a combination of hand/computer.  Some students may want to print the text but use digital art.  Others might type the text but use their own hand drawings.  Still others might use pencil paper exclusively or only computer equipment.
You may not use clipart or photos from other publications or other sources.  Computer art must be generated by you with drawing programs, digital cameras, or scanned images of your own art work.  You may not include images of photos or drawings taken with a scanner or camera from a book, encyclopedia, or other published source.  All art work must be your original work.  You may use any media appropriate for a book of this type.  Do not use art media that will smear or be hard to see clearly.
The length of your short story should reflect your ability to write a clear descriptive interesting story given the amount of time you are allowed to work on it in class and for homework.  The published copy must be created on 8 1/2 x 11 inch blank white paper.  Card stock will be used for the front and back cover. The published copy will be bound.
