Using Dialogue in Writing
Dialogue Example

Dialogue is conversation.  Conversation is talking.  In elementary school writing projects, a student might use dialogue by having characters speak in a story.

To write dialogue correctly, the student writer must:
1.  Identify the words each person or character says.
2.  Use proper punctuation.

Using Dialogue Summary:

2. Words characters say have quotation marks.
3. When one character stops talking and another starts, begin a new paragraph for the new character dialogue.
4. Punctuation is placed inside the end quotation mark.
5. It is possible for a sentence with dialogue to have two end punctuation marks.
6. Several sentences in a row spoken by one character only has one set of quotation marks.
7. Sentences broken up by narrative get their own set of quotation marks.
8. Identify the speaker.
