Grandparents Day!
Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. Make Grandparents Day special by having your students share pictures and stories about their grandparents. I also help students send their grandparents letters so we can hear back from them. We receive responses from almost all grandparents as they are thrilled to be a part of their grandchild's classroom!
I send this letter to parents a few weeks before Grandparents Day:
Dear Parents, For the next week in preparation for Grandparents Day, we will be talking about grandparents at school. To read more about Grandparents Day, visit the National Grandparents Day web site at www.grandparents-day.com. To help prompt your child to participate by talking about his or her grandparents (or other older friends of his or her choice), wed like to borrow a photograph of them. Please label the photograph so that we will know to whom to return it. Please send a photo of one or more grandparents or older friends by ___________________________. In addition, your child will have an opportunity to send a message to one or more of his/her grandparents (or other older friends.) S/he will send a card and a request that the grandparent reciprocate by sending a note to the child. If you would like your child to participate, please address one or more envelopes to the appropriate grandparents, stamp the envelopes, and return them to school. We will make each greeting card at school and include a note asking the grandparent to mail a note back to the child at school. Please return the addressed and stamped envelopes by ________________________. Thank you for helping make Grandparents Day special! |
After we get back all of the envelopes and pictures, children color a "hug" (see below) and send it with the following letter:
| Happy Grandparents Day!
In this envelope you will find a hug. It was made especially for you by _______________. Our class would really like to hear from you. Please write us a note if you can. We would like to learn something about you and the area where you live. (Maybe you could send us a postcard.) Enjoy your hug, and write to us if you can!(teacher's name & school address) |
