Description:
I have found that the most difficult words for kindergartners to read are, ironically, the words that appear most frequently in English. High-frequency words such as "the," "are," and "they" must therefore be memorized, or learned by sight. These sight word lists help students do just that - they make reading so much easier and enjoyable. It has made a dramatic difference in my class!
I have created 30 lists with five sight words on each list (150 words total). The first five lists (25 words) alone make up about a third of all printed material. The first 20 lists (100 words) make up about half of all written material. Wow!
We started sending home sight word lists around November. We do not practice them at school - students must practice sight word lists with their parents. During free choice time I sit down and test students, giving them the next list if they pass. It takes hardly any time! Students and parents have loved it.
